Oh no, Ai evangelists have discovered “Good Taste”. They think it’s got something to do with being creative, with being softly human, with being individual. Of course, they are totally missing the point of what Taste is really all about.
I hate to come over all old school critique on your Ai asses but “taste” is only good for:
1] Inflating, deflating or maintaining Art* market value. It is not about creativity.
2] Creating, maintaining and enabling realignment of In and Out groups. It is not about creativity.
That’s it. Taste – good or bad – is not eternal nor is it emotionally meaningful (definitely not that). It’s really not individual. It is socially organised and exists in direct relationship to those social and financial values already outlined. The moment you change the framing and say, “That Art is good value”, you might start to get the idea.
Having “good taste” means copying / rehashing what is already acceptable by the group leaders and members and affiliate members of the Group you want be or are already In. Having “bad taste” doesn’t mean the opposite. It just means aligning yourself with a different kind of “taste”. Because taste has nothing at all to do with imagination or creativity.
Try not asking about taste/value and start asking, “How does that make me feel?” Or “Just why do I like it?” or “Why don’t I enjoy it? What influences me?”
*Writing, music, architecture, painting, dance, ceramics, collage, sculpture, photography… you get the idea in hope.
